Our team hit quite a growth spurt last year—in 2020, our headcount increased 229%—and we haven’t slowed down. As we continued to scale, we made sure to invest in intentionally fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and inclusivity.
As we start to reimagine what in-person collaboration will look like, we feel especially grateful for our employees’ resilience, energy, and passion. We’re honored to be included in Inc.’s Best Workplaces of 2021 and take time to celebrate what makes Attentive a unique and special place to work. Derived entirely from our employees' responses to Inc.’s engagement survey, this recognition signals that our people believe Attentive is the best place to work based on employee engagement, benefits, and the meaning and growth they see in their work.
We asked our teammates what draws them to Attentive—and what they’re excited to build together.
The #1 word that employees used to describe Attentive in Inc.’s survey was “collaborative.” Considering we spent the equivalent of 23 years on Zoom calls in 2020 alone, it’s not surprising that we’re able to create more thoughtful and effective solutions when we work together on them.
From an engineering perspective, being “attentive” means prioritizing your team. This team-first culture is very important to our CTO, Harry Heymann. He acknowledges that building software at scale isn’t something you do alone in a vacuum. It requires a lot of engineers to handle the complexity and many software services that “communicate” with each other. So besides writing good software that delivers results, my goal is to focus on my team and be attentive to their needs to support overall growth.

2. Taking ownership and growing your career
Over 90% of our employees see professional growth and career development opportunities for themselves at Attentive, according to Inc.’s report. To create a culture of personal and professional growth, we encourage every employee to bring forward new ideas and push projects to the finish line. Our team loves to roll up our sleeves to do whatever it takes to help our customers succeed.

We take personal development seriously—every employee has an annual education stipend they can use to invest in their career, including conferences, courses, and other resources that will help them continue to grow.
3. Teammates who cheer you on
We are guided by the belief that we are stronger as a company when every one of us feels free to bring our whole selves to work. Central to this commitment is AWAKE (short for A Will to take Action for more Knowledge and Empowerment). This employee-led initiative celebrates and advances our community’s experiences through ERGs, including:
- Black Union: Developing a platform that empowers our community while promoting solidarity in and out of the workplace. The ERG hosted a panel on building, leading, and supporting Black and women-owned businesses, featuring three of our customers
- Prism: Empowering LGBTQ+ employees and their allies, as well as promoting the ongoing understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ communities
- Attentive Women in Engineering: Supporting and amplifying the diverse voices of women in Engineering
- I’m Speaking, Be Attentive: Building a robust pipeline of those who identify as women in technology through networking and discussion
- Amplify: Amplifying Asian American narratives and enriching our understanding of what it means to be Asian in America
- Atención: Providing an empowering environment for those who identify with the Latinx or Hispanic community
- The Village: Creating a welcoming community through connection, support, and meaningful advocacy for parents and caregivers
The Black Union allows me and others to not only feel safe but heard as we push for the structural change that we so desperately need in our country. We know there is still a lot to be done, but I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to fight racial inequality as a company.

We also believe in taking the time to celebrate each other’s wins. Every day, employees give shoutouts to their teammates in a dedicated Slack channel to recognize the work they’re doing.
I think company recognition is really important. It gives you a purpose at work and the energy to keep pushing forward—which is especially important right now during the pandemic. Feeling like you’re doing a good job while working remotely—and being recognized for that—is a reward in and of itself. It gives you the confidence you need to keep going.

4. Nurturing a comfortable and community-based work environment
Over the last year, we’ve been focused on ensuring our team members have the work environment they need to succeed. From finding new ways to stay engaged as teams (virtually)—including monthly departmental events like craft nights and company-wide volunteer events—to creating the perfect home office setup, our remote-friendly team prioritizes collaboration and balance.
I appreciate that Attentive holds events because it has given me the opportunity to form connections with people on other teams, which in turn has given me the opportunity to join some really cool projects.

We appreciate that our employees have lives and passions outside of work and support volunteer opportunities, mental health days, and the occasional meeting sidekick (four-legged or human).
The culture at Attentive is very supportive. I feel as a working parent, people understand that my kids might pop into a meeting randomly, and it’s not a big deal. I feel Attentive values the work I do and understands that I have responsibilities outside of work that require attention. On some days, I have events for the kids which means I need to log off early or be unavailable for a period of time. There’s a lot of trust being placed on employees here—that we can be flexible while still getting our work done—and that’s a really nice benefit.
