We Asked Marketers: What Questions Matter Most When Choosing an Email Platform?

We asked marketers what questions mattered most when choosing a new email platform. Here are the three conversations they said every team should have before making a decision.

The most important questions you'll ask an ESP vendor probably aren't the ones you bring into the meeting.

There are plenty of articles that tell you what to look for when evaluating an email platform.

We were curious about something slightly different.

What do marketers actually want to know before making a decision?

Not the polished talking points that make it into an RFP. The conversations that happen after the demo. The concerns you bring back to your team. The details that don't always make it into a vendor presentation—but often end up shaping the decision.

So we reached out to marketers who have been through the process and asked one simple question:

If a fellow marketer told you they were evaluating a new email platform, what would you tell them to ask every vendor before making a decision?

We expected the conversation to focus on features.

Instead, people kept coming back to something much more fundamental.

They wanted confidence.

Confidence that the partner would still be there after the contract was signed. Confidence that the platform would fit the way their business actually works. And confidence that, a year later, they'd be able to look back and say, "That was the right decision."

The specific questions varied from person to person, but they all pointed to the same three conversations.

1. Who's going to help us succeed?

This came up more than anything else.

Marketers wanted to understand what happened after implementation—not just during it.

They asked about onboarding timelines, migration ownership, quality assurance, ongoing support, and what the first few months after launch actually look like. Several people wanted to know who they'd be working with long-term and whether that relationship would be strategic or simply reactive.

Underneath those questions was a simple concern:

Will we have a partner we can rely on when things get complicated?

2. Will this actually work for our business?

The second theme had very little to do with feature lists.

Instead, marketers wanted to understand how a platform would fit into the reality of their business.

They asked about integrations, development requirements, migration hurdles, ecommerce compatibility, and whether the platform could support their specific use cases—not just generic ones.

One response summed it up particularly well:

Show me proof that your integrations actually work with my tech stack.

It wasn't about checking a box.

It was about understanding how much work the platform would create—or remove.

3. How will we know it was worth it?

The final theme focused on what happens long after implementation.

Marketers wanted to know how success would be measured, how reporting could be trusted, and how a vendor would demonstrate real business impact—not just attributed revenue.

One marketer put it this way:

How do you measure incremental value?

It's a fair question.

Choosing an email platform isn't just a technology decision. It's an investment. People want confidence that the investment will help them grow—not simply give them another dashboard to monitor.

Then there was one response we didn't expect.

"How easy is it to leave?"

At first glance, it feels like a question about contracts.

But the more we thought about it, the more it felt like a question about trust.

It's probably not something that appears on many vendor scorecards.

But maybe it should.

It was a reminder that the strongest partnerships aren't built on lock-in. They're built on trust, transparency, and confidence that you're making the right decision.

So we'll leave you with a question of our own:

If it's "Can you show me how this worked for another brand?" that's a fair question, too.
