Shopper loyalty can shift quickly. Use Attentive MCP to adapt retention efforts faster as consumer behavior changes.

Shoppers keep a short list of go-to brands: 77% of consumers shop regularly with five brands or fewer, according to Attentive’s 2026 State of Loyalty & Retention report.

And as more consumers use AI to help them shop, it can also prompt them to reconsider their choices. In our 2026 State of AI in Retail report, 62% of AI-assisted shoppers say a chatbot has led them to purchase a different product or brand instead of their usual choice.

Our research also shows what makes shoppers want to come back.

These insights can inform brands’ retention strategy and help prioritize what improvements to test.

That takes work: analyzing performance, reviewing campaigns, behavioral flows, and audiences, and drafting updates.

You may already use Claude or ChatGPT to help. But without a connection to your platform, you’re still exporting reports, supplying context, and manually implementing the changes you workshop with your AI assistant.

That changes with Attentive MCP: now in open beta, and free for all Attentive customers.

Attentive MCP connects supported AI tools to your Attentive data and workflows. Your assistant can then pull reports, inspect journey setup, and draft updates. You choose what to test and review changes before anything goes live.

Let’s look at what shoppers say earns their loyalty to guide your retention improvement conversations with MCP.

‍

What the research says about earning loyalty

Your own performance data should guide which retention improvements you prioritize with MCP. Broader shopper research adds context, helping you consider what customers value as you review your results and develop ideas to test.

Three themes stand out in our research:

  • Give customers a reason to buy again. Deals, product quality, fair pricing, and free or fast shipping all influence whether shoppers return to a new brand. Encourage the next purchase without building discount dependence: consider bundles, a gift, or free shipping on the next order. Reinforce your product’s value and remove friction with clear delivery expectations, attainable free-shipping thresholds, and easy returns.
  • Help customers get more from their purchase. 69% of shoppers say post-purchase content builds their confidence in what they bought. Use your post-purchase flow to reinforce why the product was worth choosing: explain the quality behind it, share use and care tips, and show how other customers enjoy it.
  • Retain subscribers with more relevant messaging. Shoppers cite too many messages as the top reason for unsubscribing—even when they like the brand. Yet 65% are open to more frequent messages if they’re relevant. Tailor content and frequency to subscribers’ interests, engagement, and recent purchases. Make follow-ups add something useful, and stop abandonment reminders once someone buys.

Use your connected data to find your next retention opportunity

Which part of your retention program needs attention? With MCP, you can ask your AI assistant to pull Attentive performance reports and review campaigns and journeys, all in one conversation. That brings the results and the messages behind them together, so you can decide what to investigate.

For SwimOutlet, MCP has made email and SMS questions faster to answer. The brand’s marketing leadership can review campaign and journey performance alongside subscriber growth and unsubscribes in minutes, without another export or reporting request.

Adam Hayim, CMO of Spiraledge (SwimOutlet’s parent company), recommends being specific: explain the decision you’re making, provide the business context, describe the output you need, and set boundaries for the work.

Consider starting with questions like:

  • Program performance: Which retention journeys or variants have declining engagement or conversion?
  • Subscriber retention: Where have unsubscribes increased, and which campaigns or journeys should we review?
  • Post-purchase performance: How do results compare across variants of our post-purchase journey?
  • Winback performance: Which groups of lapsed customers are purchasing again after entering our winback flow?

Choose the metrics that matter to you and a comparison period. Then confirm the data needed to answer your question. If certain outcomes live in another system, connect that source or provide the report so your AI assistant has full context.

For example, to explore post-purchase performance, ask your assistant to compare results across journeys and summarize the differences worth reviewing. This helps you consider which elements may align with better performance.

Imagine the comparison shows that stronger-performing flows include product-use tips, while weaker ones rely on promotions alone. You review the audience and product differences and decide that adding education is worth testing.

MCP saves you the work of opening each journey and parsing out the differences manually. Your AI assistant uses MCP to bring the insights together; you choose what to improve. With that decision made, you can prepare the test.

‍

Act on retention insights faster with MCP

Once you’ve chosen an improvement, MCP helps you put it into practice faster. With write-enabled access, your assistant can create new campaign and journey drafts in Attentive or update existing ones, reducing the manual work between deciding what to test and getting it ready.

That could mean drafting a winback campaign, creating a replenishment flow, or adding content to an existing post-purchase flow. You set the direction and review the proposed changes before anything goes live.

In the case of the post-purchase education test, you would ask your assistant to draft journey revisions adding product education to the weaker-performing variants you identified. Provide your approved product-use and care material so it can make changes accurately.

Review the drafts for product accuracy and confirm that the A/B split, timing, and audience rules match the test you planned.

Before launching your test, decide how you’ll measure success and set a test window that fits your buying cycle.

Example prompt

“Compare performance across our post-purchase journey variants over the past 90 days using the available metrics. Summarize the main differences in message content, timing, offers, and eligibility rules between stronger- and weaker-performing variants. Flag audience or product differences that matter when comparing results.”

Example prompt

“Create draft revisions of the post-purchase journeys we reviewed. Within each selected weaker-performing variant, create a randomized 50/50 A/B split. Keep the existing experience for the control group. For the test group, add a product education message as the second message, scheduled for two days after purchase. Use the stronger variants as a reference and our approved care material for product details. Keep existing messages and their timing, offers, eligibility rules, and exclusions unchanged, and leave other variants as they are. Summarize the proposed changes for my review.”
